Hi, I’m Lexie — a watercolor and gouache artist based in Huntsville, inspired by Southern landscapes, everyday beauty, and the stories tucked inside ordinary moments.
I’m drawn to the kinds of things people pass every day but somehow never forget — old church signs, blooming flowers, quiet backroads, favorite local landmarks, sunlight through the trees, and the feeling of home. My work blends expressive watercolor, rich color, and layered texture to capture moments that feel joyful, nostalgic, and familiar.
Before becoming a full-time artist in 2025, I spent nearly 20 years working in libraries. Long before I painted professionally, I loved helping people connect with stories — and in many ways, that’s still what I’m doing now, just with paint instead of books.
Watercolor has a beautiful unpredictability to it that I’ve completely fallen in love with. I especially love the soft movement of pigment on wet paper, the texture of granulating colors, and the little happy accidents that make each painting one of a kind. I work primarily on archival 100% cotton paper using professional-grade watercolor and gouache designed to last for generations.
My paintings range from florals and landscapes to Southern architecture, spiritual themes, and whimsical local scenes inspired by life here in Alabama. Whether it’s a quiet field, a downtown mural, or a favorite hometown memory, I hope my work helps people feel connected to the places and moments they love most.
In addition to creating original artwork and fine art prints, I also teach watercolor classes and participate in local markets and gallery events throughout North Alabama. My work can be found locally at places including University Pickers, Alabama Goods, and Harrison Brothers Hardware.
When I’m not painting, you can usually find me thrift store shopping for brightly colored and unusual clothes, traveling, or curled up with a good book. I live in Huntsville with my husband, son, and a giant fluffy dog named Thea, who firmly believes every painting session should include snack breaks. 💗
One of my favorite projects I’ve ever created began when the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library invited one of my all-time favorite authors, Andy Weir, to visit Huntsville.
The library asked if I would create a painting they could present to him that represented Huntsville — its past, present, and future. Since Andy Weir is the author of The Martian, Artemis, and Project Hail Mary (and one of my favorite authors EVER), my answer was an immediate: “OF COURSE!!”
And that’s how Huntsville: From Cotton Fields to Constellations was born. 💗
The painting weaves together the story of Huntsville through layers of imagery: the red clay of North Alabama, cotton fields, dogwood and magnolia blossoms representing the city’s roots, downtown landmarks (including the library itself), and the towering Saturn V rocket symbolizing Huntsville’s role in space exploration. Above it all are the moon — and beyond that, Mars — a nod to both imagination and the future still ahead.
The highlight of my artistic career was getting to hand the painting to Andy Weir in person — a surreal full-circle moment for both a lifelong reader and a local artist.
